Norton King's Daughters' Health is Hiring a Patient Care Technician (PCT) Med Surg Near Madison, IN

Working under minimal supervision, utilizes the nursing process and professional standards of practice to ensure safe, quality patient care in compliance with the Indiana Nurse Practice Act, regulatory requirements, HIPAA, and KDH organizational, infection control, and nursing values, policies, and procedures. Assists Nursing Director and Nurse Manager in coordinating integration of services for achievement of planned patient outcomes for the specific patient population age groups as defined by areas of practice: 3 Medical/Pediatrics - pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric with occasional neonate; 4 Medical/Surgical - adult & geriatric, Mother/Baby - neonate, adolescent and adult. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Directing and overseeing the admission, transfer, discharge, and general flow of patients for the department
  • Utilizes proper technique when lifting, transferring, and ambulating patients for patient and staff safety
  • Ensures work areas are clean and orderly
  • Provides and coordinates the resources needed (i.e. staffing) within the department to provide optimal patient care based on certification, competency completion, etc. in accordance with the Delineation of Duties, regulatory requirements, etc.
  • Meets all RN General Summary requirements in order to assume patient care as needed
  • Identifies, recognizes and responds to the needs of unit staff to ensure that staff has the resources and tools available to maintain a safe; comfortable and therapeutic environment for patient and family
  • Flexible, able to remain calm, prioritize, and adapt throughout shift for all situations
  • Utilizes excellent customer service standards and Studer principles in communicating with patient, family, and coworkers through use of verbal amenities, pleasant facial and body expressions as well as pleasant voice tone
  • Exemplifies and promotes professional practice
  • Ensures compliance and adherence with stated policies and procedures for the department
  • Takes a leadership role in building and maintaining an environment which fosters open and honest communication
  • Facilitates communication with physicians/APNs and leadership team as well as among unit staff and department to department to provide optimal patient and family-centered care
  • Serves as a mediator in resolution of conflicts between nursing staff
  • Takes appropriate action to coach employees and unacceptable communication/behavior as needed
  • Actively participates in preparation of regulatory agency reviews
  • Assists in administrative activities such as budget planning, identifying means of cost containment, etc.
  • Takes appropriate action to address customer concerns and complaints (i.e., appropriate follow-up with Director/Nurse Manager and Risk Management)
  • Refers escalated patient issues to Director/Nurse Manager when unable to resolve
  • Ensures department compliance with educational requirements through staff scheduling, planning, and support
  • Contributes to the performance appraisal process
  • Actively participates in the hiring and counseling of employees as appropriate
  • Identifies managerial problems and participates in QAPI PDCA process
  • May be asked to assist with patient care in any area of the hospital, as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

Possesses and maintains Indiana RN licensure. Minimum of two years clinical experience.

Required:

  • Possesses good problem solving abilities including follow-up and reporting
  • Calmly and confidently handles highly stressful situations
  • Energetic and motivated
  • Requires ability to provide compassion, clinical reasoning, decision-making, and critical thinking in a therapeutic environment appropriate to age and diagnosis of patients served
  • Excellent oral communication skills to discuss patient care needs
  • Excellent non-verbal communication skills (presence, touch, eye contact, etc.) with patients, families and other staff
  • Written communication skills, as well as, computer skills for documentation in the medical record
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment, as well as, to react quickly, appropriately, and efficiently in any situation
  • Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice, as well as, human and psycho-social needs, and the ability to apply nursing techniques to patient care situations and provide an individualized plan of care to the patient as well as assist other nursing personnel in meeting patient needs
  • Demonstrates accountability for own actions, understands own limitations, seeks advice and assistance when necessary, and assume responsibility for personal growth and skill development
  • Maintains AHA BLS and ACLS, NRP, or PALS
